Dr. Jane Knodell to Speak on Higher Education and Stereotypes of Leadership

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (Jan. 23, 2014) — The immediate past provost and senior vice president at the University of Vermont, Burlington, Vt., will discuss the future of higher education at a SUNY Plattsburgh forum, 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 20.

Part of the presidential lecture series, Dr. Jane Knodell’s talk, “Crossing Borders: A Way Forward for U.S. Higher Education in the 21st Century,” will take place in the Hyman and Francis Krinovitz Recital Hall, Hawkins Hall.

Earlier that same day, she will present "Stereotypes of Leadership in the Academy" at the gender and women’s studies forum, 12.30 p.m. in the Alumni Conference Room, Angell College Center.

Both talks are free and open to public.

Knodell is currently a professor of economics at UVM, Burlington. Between 2001 and 2013, she served in a series of academic leadership roles there: as chair of the Department of Economics; associate dean and interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences; associate provost; provost; and senior vice president.

As provost, she advanced trans-disciplinary research, the re-envisioning of undergraduate education and the internationalization of the campus.

Her teaching and research are in the fields of money, banking and macroeconomics, and she is currently working on a book about the Second Bank of the United States (1816-1836).

Knodell also has a long record of service to her community as a Burlington City Councilor.

She received her B.A. and Ph.D. in economics from Stanford University and was a reader at University of Sorbonne in Paris between her graduate studies.
