Graduate Admissions Requirements
Admission to graduate study at SUNY Plattsburgh is based on the academic and personal qualifications of applicants and is granted without regard to race, creed, color, sex, age, national origin, sexual orientation, disability or handicap.
Graduate programs are administered by their respective academic departments and deans’ offices. The decision to accept or deny an applicant resides within these departments.
General Admission Requirements
While each graduate program has its own requirements, prospective students applying for matriculation into a Master's Degree or Certificate of Advanced Study Program at SUNY Plattsburgh will need the following:
- Baccalaureate Degree from an accredited institution (C.A.S./Educational Leadership candidates will also need a Master's Degree)
- Grade point average of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (Consult each program for its grade point requirement)
- Satisfactory scores on an admission test:
- All programs will accept the Graduate Record Exam (G.R.E.)
- Some programs will also accept the Miller Analogies Test (M.A.T.)
- Education graduate programs do not require an admission test
- Education program candidates must submit a copy of their teaching certificate (except M.S.T. which does not require prior provisional certification)
- An Application for Graduate Admission (obtained from the Graduate Admissions Office) that includes
- Statement of Purpose describing your purpose in pursuing graduate work, your professional aims and career goals.
- Three Letters of Recommendation indicating your ability to pursue graduate work.
- Non-refundable $75 (U.S. dollars) application fee.
Be Sure and Remember:
- Some degree programs have additional admission requirements.
- Some degree programs require personal interviews and/or supplemental application materials.
- Programs that require an interview will not accept late applications.
- The Application for Graduate Admission, the Graduate Catalog, and the Program Profile Brochures provide information on specific requirements. You may also contact the appropriate department chair or program coordinator.
