About English
Why Major in English?
If you ask Google that question, you'll find that English majors
- like words and ideas,
- want to become better, more intelligent readers, writers, and thinkers,
- want a college career and a life that are "exciting, challenging, and rewarding,"
- want to explore "the most fascinating ideas and thinkers in intellectual history,"
- are interested in "great works of imaginative literature that capture the spirit of their times,"
- want a major that's both marketable and flexible,
- want to find a job they enjoy,
- believe that learning about others "gives us the chance to learn about ourselves,"
- think understanding cultures in a "deeper, broader" way is important for an "intelligent, diverse, and harmonious society,"
- believe that majoring in English helps them grasp "what it means to be human," and
- believe that majoring in English "brings a sense of reward, fulfillment, and pleasure."
Well, no one ever accused English majors of being short of words.
More Reasons To Major in English
- The primary reason to become an English major? To study a field you love to find a job you love to lead a life you love.
- The primary reason to become an English major at Plattsburgh State? To study a field you love with teachers you love in classes you love.
Those two sentence fragments pretty much sum up the English major here.
But I will leave you with one last observation from an English major on the web:
"Have you ever noticed what people do on airplanes or in airports? Yes, English studies - reading, writing, newspapers, magazines, films, books are everywhere. Do you see anyone doing other studies for fun in the airport?"
Neither do I.
