Certification Testing Updates
Upon successful completion of your respective program & passing scores of the necessary New York State Teacher Certification Exams (N.Y.S.T.C.E.), you will then apply for an Initial Certification. The Initial Certification will be valid for three years. A one-year extension is possible with 24 semester hours of approved graduate study. Requirements for a Professional Certificate:
- Master's degree* http://www.highered.nysed.gov/tcert/certificate/faqcertip.htm - 5
- Three years teaching experience, including a one-year mentored teaching experience
- Renewed every five years with 175 hours of professional development

Which New York State Teacher Certification Exams (N.Y.S.T.C.E.) are necessary?
Adolescence Education Program (Grades 7-12 in various subjects):
- Take the Liberal Arts & Sciences Test (L.A.S.T.) your first semester of your Junior Year
- You should take the Content Specialty Test (C.S.T.) in your respective discipline the second semester of your Junior Year
- The Secondary Assessment of Teaching Skills-Written (A.T.S.-W.) should be taken either during your Professional Semester (first semester Senior) or during Student Teaching
Childhood Education (Elementary grades 1-6):
- Take the L.A.S.T. your first semester of your Junior Year
- The Multi-Subject C.S.T. replaces the former Elementary Education C.S.T., and you should take it your second semester of your Junior Year
- The Elementary Assessment of Teaching Skills-Written (A.T.S.-W.) should be taken either during your Block II Semester (first semester Senior) or during Student Teaching
- New requirements for current certificate holders to obtain an additional certificate in any title - your 30-credit concentration. Go to: http://www.highered.nysed.gov/tcert/certificate/notice12122003.htm
Dual Certification Program in Special/Childhood Education (grades 1-6):
- Take the L.A.S.T. your second semester of your Sophomore Year
- The Multi-Subject C.S.T. should be taken your first semester of your Junior Year
- The Elementary Assessment of Teaching Skills-Written (A.T.S.-W.) should be taken during your second semester of your junior year
- The Students with Disabilities C.S.T. should be taken either your first semester of your Senior Year or during Student teaching

*Please note that you will need to take the Praxis I: Pre-Professional Skills Tests (P.P.S.T.) at least two semesters before enrolling for EDU330
