Internships

Why Participate in an Internship?

As a SUNY Plattsburgh business administration major you will be encouraged to participate in one or two internships during your four years of academic study. This is an integral part of your learning experiences and will allow you to expand your options for the future.

What does an Internship do?

An internship with any type of business or company will offer you the opportunity to "test the waters" of the business world.

  • You will find out what you like and don't like.
  • You will begin to discover your level of comfort with your own personal and professional skills.
  • You will be exposed to hands-on experiences that test your business knowledge.
  • You will be building a resume for your future.

What is an internship?

An internship is an opportunity for you to work in a company or organization for an extended period of time. An internship can be paid or unpaid. Once you have registered for an internship, and paid tuition, you will receive credit toward degree completion.

  • You can search for a placement yourself or stop by the SBE Office for Career Opportunities & Internships to discuss and identify a number of opportunities suited to your individual needs.
  • An internship can be an extension of a summer job that you currently have or a new opportunity that you would like to try.
  • Many times an internship opportunity has turned into a full-time job offer after graduation

How do I apply for an Internship?

You will prepare for an internship during your first two or three years of study by completing the general business core of classes and your general education. When you have obtained junior status and maintained a minimum GPA of 2.5, you will eligible to apply for an internship with the SBE Office of Career Opportunities & Internships.

You will need to prepare a written proposal for the internship, identify and confirm an SBE faculty sponsor, and develop an on-site supervisor. Your faculty sponsor will help you develop your opportunity in an academic way and your on-site supervisor will help you do the job well and evaluate your internship at the end of the semester.

We encourage you to have discussions about internships with your instructors and advisors long before your junior year.
