Students interested in pursuing graduate work in the field are provided a diverse, challenging and creative blend of course work that follows the American Art Therapy Association guidelines for undergraduate study. Students develop a professional portfolio, learn about the field through coursework (ART 325 or PSY 326 - Introduction to Art Therapy), and experience the field under the supervision of a registered art therapist in the Art Therapy Practicum (PSY 327).
Art Therapy Practicum is a 3-credit course, combining site-based experiences with weekly art therapy supervision. On site supervisors (including social workers, special education teachers, activity therapy directors, school psychologists and counselors) provide guidance and mentoring as the art therapy student explores education systems, hospital settings, extended care facilities and other professional practice placements. Students offer individual and small group creative art experiences as well as related support activities in their settings.
