You can find out who your academic advisor is by
- accessing Banner Web
- contacting the department chair for your program
- Visiting the Academic Advising Office in Feinberg FL101-103
Academic advising helps students to:
- Clarify educational goals
- Become aware of educational options
- Plan coursework for each semester
- Monitor academic progress
- Access resources
- Explore life, career and educational issues
Academic advisors:
- Provide support, guidance, and mentorship
- Direct students to information about your major
- Assist students in understanding degree requirements
- Help students to use academic tools like the transcript or CAPP report
- Connect students to campus resources
Students are responsible for:
- Learning the name and location of her/his advisor
- Scheduling appointments throughout the academic year
- Giving advance notice if an appointment must be rescheduled
- Contacting the department chair if an advisor is unavailable
- Becoming familiar with all program requirements and academic tools
- Asking questions of an advisor, especially if there is confusion about policies, procedures or degree requirements
- Informing an advisor before changing majors, transferring to another college or withdrawing
How to Declare or Change Your Major
Obtain a copy of a Declaration or Change of Major/Minor/Advisor form in the Academic Advising Office, Feinberg FL101-103. Complete the identifying information and take the form to the department chair of the major you would like to declare. The department chair of your intended major will review your request (you may be asked for a copy of your transcript), assign you to a new academic advisor within the major, and sign the form, which indicates acceptance into the major. The completed form must be returned to the Academic Advising Office for official processing.
