SUNY Plattsburgh awards over $4 million in merit-based scholarships each year, but only one percent of all applicants will be nominated for the prestigious, full-tuition Presidential Scholarship. Last year, five of our best incoming students were selected to receive this award; let’s hear a few of their stories:

List five words that describe your personality: Hard-working, Determined, Loyal, Dedicated, and Caring.
Why did you choose SUNY Plattsburgh? Because the campus felt like a good fit from my first visit. I also could imagine myself on the cross country and track teams when I first met my future teammates.
Favorite SUNY Plattsburgh class from the Fall 2014: Spanish 314 (Conversational Spanish). It intimidated me at first, but in the end, it boosted my confidence!
Name the person/people who have been most influential in your life: My parents have been the most people influential in my life. They have supported and guided me through all of my decisions. They encourage me to push myself, and they have taught me to become a determined person.
Favorite Plattsburgh experience: My favorite Plattsburgh experience has been running the NCAA Northeast Regional race with my cross country team. We all enjoyed running against the best runners from the other Division III schools in our region, and we were able to prove all of our hard work throughout the season.
Describe how the Honors Program is positively shaping your academic experience: The Honors Program is helping me to become a better critical thinker and writer. I am enjoying the small class because it allows for more class discussions.
What surprised you most about SUNY Plattsburgh? The close proximity to the Saranac River. I enjoy running along the Saranac River Trail which is right on campus near the dorms.
Name one item you brought with you this school year and couldn’t imagine living without: I am thankful that I brought pictures to hang on my wall to remind me of my family and friends from home. They make great wall decorations.

SUNY Plattsburgh Clubs/Organizations/Activities: SNAPS (Student Nursing Association at Plattsburgh State), Honors Student Association, Hard Hattians, Zumba, Kickboxing.
List five words that describe your personality: Determined, Assiduous, Motivated, Creative, and Dazzling.
Why did you choose SUNY Plattsburgh? Because of the great reputation of the nursing staff and program. After the first two years, I will not have to reapply for my spot in the program since it is a direct admit program right from freshman year. The hospital is also right next to campus.
Favorite SUNY Plattsburgh class from the Fall 2014: Chemistry. My strong science background made it enjoyable, but also challenging.
Name the person/people who have been most influential in your life: My brother, Royce, has definitely been the most influential person in my life. He has always encouraged my success inside and outside the classroom, and always offered a helping hand.
Favorite Plattsburgh experience: Attending Zumba classes on Wednesday nights. This is the first time in fifteen years that I have not taken a dance class, and dancing in Zumba is not only really fun, but good exercise!
Describe how the Honors Program is positively shaping your academic experience: The small group discussions are so enjoyable. The material is also more centralized and specific, allowing me to go really in depth into the topic. The Honors Student Association has also allowed me to participate in unique activities I wouldn’t have done otherwise.
What surprised you most about SUNY Plattsburgh? Before coming to Plattsburgh, I had no idea that there was a bike trail running along the Saranac River. During nice weather, I would often run to the end of it and back, which was exactly a 5k.
Name one item you brought with you this school year and couldn’t imagine living without: I definitely could not imagine living in my dorm without a hutch for my desk. It added a shelf to the desk where I could put my fish bowl and decorations, as well as a cork board where I could pin pictures and reminders.
List five words that describe your personality: Diligent, Competitive, Focused, Caring, and Honest.
Why did you choose SUNY Plattsburgh? From my first visit it felt like home. The students and staff are friendly and outgoing. Also, I love the campus and its close proximity to Vermont, Canada and the Lake Champlain Valley region. There's always something to do.
Favorite SUNY Plattsburgh class from the Fall 2014: My Honors seminar. It was a small seminar that focused on improving basic math skills by solving problems with different techniques than normal. It was interesting to learn new approaches to solving math problems.
Name the person/people who have been most influential in your life: My parents have been the most influential people in my life. They encourage me to do my best academically and have supported me athletically since day one.
Favorite Plattsburgh experience: The Honors trip to Montreal was one of my favorite experiences so far. I got to meet some of the people in the Honors Program and explore the city of Montreal with them.
Describe how the Honors Program is positively shaping your academic experience: Being in the Honors Program provides great opportunities to its members. The Honors seminars are always fun, as they are in smaller groups and discussion based, rather than a lecture.
What surprised you most about SUNY Plattsburgh? SUNY Plattsburgh has a plethora of student clubs and organizations to join. There is virtually something for everyone to join. If not, you can still go do a million different things either on campus, or off campus. It was a shock to me when I walked on campus and saw so many people outside doing things.
Name one item you brought with you this school year and couldn’t imagine living without: I am very glad that I brought my car to college. Having a car helps shorten the ride to practice, and allows me to drive wherever I need to on my own time. Plus, whenever I want to go do something off campus with my friends, I can just drive!

Major: Combined B.S./M.S.Ed. Program in Special & Childhood Education (Concentration in Music)
SUNY Plattsburgh Clubs/Organizations/Activities: Saxophone Ensemble and College Chorale. I have always enjoyed music, and the various music ensembles at SUNY Plattsburgh allow me to continue that passion. I also enjoy taking Zumba classes at Memorial Hall.
List five words that describe your personality: Consistent, Compassionate, Responsible, Friendly, Dedicated..
Why did you choose SUNY Plattsburgh? Several factors drew me to SUNY Plattsburgh. The combined Elementary and Special Education program is excellent and will allow me to obtain both my Bachelors and Masters Degrees in five years instead of the traditional six. I also liked the area and its proximity to so many different activities.
Favorite SUNY Plattsburgh class from the Fall 2014: I really enjoyed my Honors seminar with Dr. James Armstrong. The topic was “Sexuality, Identity, and Culture” and it was also a gateway course, meaning that all of the students were first semester freshmen. We had some very interesting discussions in this class and it was a great way to meet other freshmen that were in the same boat as me.
Name the person/people who have been most influential in your life: My parents have always been my biggest supporters. They are both teachers, and seeing the work they do has definitely made me want to pursue a teaching career. I know I can always call them for whatever, and it’s great to have a support system when you're living away from home. My older sister has also been a role model for me throughout my life.
Favorite Plattsburgh experience: For my Introductory Music Symposium course, we had the opportunity to travel to Montreal to see the opera. We had a bit of time to walk around the city and the opera itself was great. This was a fun experience and I hope to travel back to Montreal soon.
Describe how the Honors Program is positively shaping your academic experience: Discussions in Honors Seminars allow students to express their ideas on topics that are interesting to them. The Honors Program also provides great opportunities to meet other students who are passionate about their studies.
What surprised you most about SUNY Plattsburgh? How much I enjoy walking around Downtown Plattsburgh. There are some great shops that are fun to explore. There are also some excellent restaurants!.
Name one item you brought with you this school year and couldn’t imagine living without: I really love my Keurig. It's great to have a burst of energy for my early classes, and on cold days a hot drink is really nice.

List five words that describe your personality: Independent, Creative, Tolerant, Easygoing, and Genuine.
Why did you choose SUNY Plattsburgh? Having grown up in the area, I initially overlooked SUNY Plattsburgh in my college search. After taking an official tour of the campus I had driven by my entire life, it opened up my eyes to new opportunities and I liked it more than other schools I had visited.
Favorite SUNY Plattsburgh class from the Fall 2014: My Honors seminar, “Individuality, Eccentricity, and Mayhem” with Dr. Tracy, was the most interesting class I've ever taken. We discussed the intricacies of 17th century culture and wrote a revenge tragedy play that we read aloud in class. Although intimidating at first, the class ended up being very intriguing and enjoyable.
Name the person/people who have been most influential in your life: My parents have helped me become who I am today, because they have always supported and encouraged me to pursue what I love. They also taught me to be accepting and honest, and to take responsibility for my actions, especially my education.
Favorite Plattsburgh experience: Coming back to campus for the spring semester and getting to see my friends again was great. After six weeks off, it felt good to be back on campus with a new semester ahead of me!
Describe how the Honors Program is positively shaping your academic experience: The unique courses that the Honors Program offers are great because they focus on topics that are really fascinating and challenge you to think in new ways. The Honors Program also has cool activities like hikes and trips to Montreal that allow you to meet and bond with other honors students.
What surprised you most about SUNY Plattsburgh? I was surprised at how different living on campus was compared to living at home. Seeing the reactions of people who were new to Plattsburgh gave me a new perspective on the city I thought I knew.
Name one item you brought with you this school year and couldn’t imagine living without: I'm so glad I brought my travel mug to school, because it's wonderful to have hot chocolate or tea to bring to class on cold winter days.
